WHAT packaging — the hat box

WHAT: packaging design for a hat brand

Packaging and visual identity design for WHAT, a millinery brand. A hat box that becomes a brand object.

Context

WHAT is a hat-making brand that puts boldness at the heart of its identity. In a sector where packaging is often no more than a functional container, the brand wanted to turn its hat box into a genuine piece of communication. The ambition: that the customer keeps the box, shows it off, and that it extends the brand experience well beyond the purchase.

Issues identified

An object of desire: Making the packaging an extension of the brand that the customer wants to keep
Visual impact: Creating packaging recognisable from a distance in a shop or on a shelf
Manufacturing constraints: Designing something that could be produced with the printing processes available

Creative approach

The project was approached as a product design exercise in its own right, going beyond the usual boundaries of screen-based graphic design.

1. A typographic identity

The name WHAT, short and punchy, was treated as a dominant graphic element. The typeface chosen plays on contrasts of weight to assert the brand’s personality: direct, assertive, no detours.

2. Designing the box

The packaging design turned on several principles:

  • Treating the name as a graphic pattern structuring the whole surface
  • A restricted colour palette to maximise visual impact
  • Manufacturing constraints built in from the design phase onwards
  • Work on the finishes to reinforce the perception of quality

3. Brand coherence

The identity developed for the packaging was conceived as the foundation of a visual system that could be extended across all of the brand’s media: labels, tissue paper, bags and digital communication.

Results

  • Packaging that became a brand signature, kept and reused by customers
  • A strong, immediately recognisable visual identity
  • A coherent graphic system from the packaging through to digital

Impact

This project illustrates the ability to work beyond the screen, on product design and packaging questions. The WHAT box proves that well-designed packaging does not only protect a product: it tells a brand story and creates a lasting bond with the customer.
